The Israelites feared the Philistines because the Philistines wanted to kill and wipe out the Israelites.  The Philistines even captured the Ark of the Lord from Israel at one time (1Samuel 4).  The Israelites also feared the Philistines because the Philistines had a giant soldier named Goliath in their army.

Armed with only a sling, David picked a stone from a riverbed and slung it at Goliath's head.  David's aim was true; the stone struck the giant and killed him, prompting the Philistines to flee.  The Israelites were jubilant.  Saul was compelled to place young David at the head of his army (ISamuel 18:5).

The Hebrew Bible describes about 8-9 battles that King David fought in over the course of his life.

How were the Philistines defeated?

They were finally defeated by the Israelite king David (10th century), and thereafter their history was that of individual cities rather than of a people.  After the division of Judah and Israel (10th century), the Philistines regained their independence and often engaged in border battles with those kingdoms.

Who defeated the Philistine army?

Jonathan, in the Old Testament (I and II Samuel), eldest son of King Saul; his intrepidity and fidelity to his friend, the future king David, make him one of the most admired figures in the Bible. Jonathan is first mentioned in ISam. 13:2, when he defeated a garrison of Philistines at Geba.

What happened with David and the Philistines?

According to the Hebrew Bible, when the youthful David fell into disfavour with King Saul, who allegedly tried to spear him, he fled to the Philistines.  The Philistine king Achish of Gath allowed David to move to Ziklag, which, according to the biblical narrative, became a base for him to build up his forces.

During the time of the judges, the Philistines were a near-constant threat to Israel.  Under Samuel's leadership, the Israelites went out to fight the Philistines.  But Israel was defeated because of their sin.  The elders of Israel realized that God had allowed their defeat.

Who was King David and why was he so important?

David, (flourished c. 1000 bce), second king of ancient Israel. He founded the Judean dynasty and united all the tribes of Israel under a single monarch.  His son Solomon expanded the empire that David built.

Why is David the greatest king of Israel?

His greatness was due to a combination of factors, namely: providence, courage, divine anointing, his leadership skills, his exploits as a warrior, his psalms that re-echoes humanities emotional struggles, his unparalleled quest for God and his statesmanship as a king.

He is also in the genetic line of Jesus the Christ of Almighty God, who is yet to rule on Earth!
