Melchizedek

Question: How did Paul know so much about Melchizedek?

Google; and the Bible accounts.

Who is Melchizedek and why is he important?

Melchizedek is thought to have been the king of Jerusalem.  Salem, of which he is said to be king, is very probably Jerusalem.  Psalm 76:2 refers to Salem in a way that implies that it is synonymous with Jerusalem, and the reference in Genesis 14:17 to “the King's Valley” further confirms this identification.

What happened to Melchizedek in the Bible?

Like Jesus, "he remains a priest forever".  The author of Hebrews says that Melchizedek is "without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life".  Taken literally, this would mean that Melchizedek is an eternal being.

Why did Jesus come in the order of Melchizedek?

According to the writer of Hebrews (7:13-17) Jesus is considered a priest in the order of Melchizedek because, like Melchizedek, Jesus was not a descendant of Aaron, and thus would not qualify for the Jewish priesthood under the Law of Moses.

How is Melchizedek without father or mother?

The author of Heb. 7:3 affirms of Melchizedek: "He is without father or mother or genealogy; he has neither beginning of days nor end of life . . . he continues a priest forever".  Scholars argue that the author draws on Gen 14:17-20, which introduces Melchizedek without the customary identification of his clan.

What is the lesson of Melchizedek?

As an archetype of Jesus, he points us to a greater priesthood that will last eternally.  He also exemplifies kingly humility by declaring a blessing over Abraham and acknowledging God's almighty power.  Like the Levitical priests and the high priest, Melchizedek acts as a mediator between the people and God.

How is Melchizedek related to Jesus?

In Christianity, according to the Epistle to the Hebrews, Jesus Christ is identified as "High priest forever in the order of Melchizedek", and so Jesus assumes the role of High Priest once and for all.
